Telecom Stocks Outlook For The Week – 20 To 24.11.2017
Stocks of most telecommunications companies are seen trading in a narrow range next week as investors take cognisance of their performance in the September quarter. Sentiment over stocks of most telecom companies, which have taken a beating since the launch of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, is likely to improve due to signs of a revival in their subscriber base. Seen rising on technical
cues; big banks to gain The low-cost voice and data bundles of RJio have led to an aggressive tariff war and erosion of subscriber base of other telecom companies over the last one year. Though Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular reported earnings within expected lines, the average revenue per user of the two companies continued to decline. Idea Cellular, which detailed its Jul-Sep earnings on Monday, saw its consolidated loss widen to 11.1 bln rupees in Jul-Sep from 8.1 bln rupees a quarter ago. The company expects a 3-bln-rupee hit to its operating profit during Oct-Mar owing to a cut in interconnect usage charges. Its operating profit fell 20% on quarter to 15 bln rupees in Jul-Sep.
We believe there is a need for either Reliance Jio to further raise rates or these companies to bridge the gap between their tariffs and that of Reliance Industries Ltd's telecom arm. However, over the past few weeks, the companies have seen an improvement in subscriber base as customers of Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices look to switch mobile operators. RComm has announced the closure of its consumer voice business while Tata Teleservices will sell its wireless business to Bharti Airtel.
