Telecom Stocks Outlook For The Week - 31.12.2018 To 04.01.2019
Though the long-term outlook for the telecom sector remains negative, stocks of mobile operators may post some gains tracking the broader market. However, the gains may be short-lived as investors are likely to focus on revival in financials of telecom companies, which have been battered in 2018 due to cut-throat competition and consequent slump in tariff. The focus will be on recovery of tariff in 2019, something which proved illusive for telecom stocks this year, and we expect content such as video and music streaming to be key factors for mobile operators to win subscribers as well as to encourage them to move towards higher tariff plans. The trend of suppressed tariff is likely to continue for at least another quarter, and revenue and subscriber market share will be key parameters to track. Shares of Reliance Industries gained 22% in 2018, primarily on account of the success of its telecom arm Reliance Jio Infocomm. The new entrant to the sector made profits despite leading the tariff war, while Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea bled. Shares of the two companies tanked 40% and 65%, respectively, in 2018.
